About Doc Roberts The Flameworker

Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada most of my time was spent turning over rocks, looking for lizards, snakes and lots of fishing. I love the outdoors. I'm influenced by my many travels to countries including Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, Aruba, Ireland, China and the Philippines. As a result of my travels, I have come across many shapes and colors. This paired with my mystical imagination, has inspired creativity in my designs. I embrace both traditional and innovative techniques, and my work is marked by attention to detail.

My interest in glass work began in my garage in the fall of 2007. Beginning as a self taught glass worker using a technique called flameworking, I had a lot of trial and error creating glass beads. This has helped me develop my own techniques that I use in constructing my designs. As my passion for glass sculpture continued to grow, I sought insight from other experts including Loren Stump, Milon Townsend, and Vittorio Costantini. I find flameworking as enthralling as it is challenging. As an unforgiving medium as molten glass is, I’m drawn to its beauty as well my need to find meaning in disorder. With the coveted secrets I have learned domestically as abroad I'm learning to hone my skills with this enigmatic material. I’m able to achieve great detail or soft abstraction. My current work is an intensive explosion of colors and reflect my desire to experiment and explore ideas. Creating my work begins with meticulous planning with color, patterns and design. With limited time to shape glass in to the sculpture I have designed it requires precision and urgency. Watching it come to life in the flame satisfies my need for perfection. Oh yeah did I mention I get to play with fire.

My work is individually hand made on a torch, using glass rods, glass tubes, and various metals like silver, and gold. All of my product is properly annealed in a digital kiln. My work is featured in galleries and art leagues around Texas and most recently I made a life size mask using a networking technique that has been displayed at the Rockport center for the arts. I've been feature on Victoria Television and the local paper in Victoria, Texas. If you are looking for more information where to purchase my art you can contact me by email or phone for more information.
